Title: Transmission
Director: Zak Hilditch
Length: 13 minutes
Synopsis: In a time when disease has struck the world’s population, a man and his daughter must make the trip from the Perth coast to the middle of Australia in hopes of safety. Surviving the pandemic requires nine-year-old Tilly to grow up much faster than her father could ever dream.
Why We’re Excited: We can never say no to post-apocalyptic films, and Transmission hits the spot just right. It’s got suspense, action, drama, and all the looks of an Academy Award movie in one pint-sized package. The beautiful Australian backdrop looks almost painted on the screen. And sight and sound speak much louder than words, as the visuals work hand in hand with the sharply attuned buzzing flies, radio static and speed of the little red car the two drive down the empty highway. Director Hilditch shows Australia like we’ve rarely seen before, and this short makes us wonder why filmmakers don’t take us to the land down under more often.
How You Can Watch: Available today through the end of the Festival (April 29) on the Tribeca VOD portal. All you need is an AMEX card to log in.

Title: BFF
Director: Neil LaBute
Length: 8 minutes
Synopsis: Jill (Gia Crovatin) is suspicious of her boyfriend’s loyalty, and runs to her ‘BFF’ Jack (Thomas Sadoski) for advice. Jack asks his Brooklyn ‘BFF’ if she really wants to uncover the truth, and offers his help to find out.
Why We’re Excited: Since last year’s The Artist, black and white is back in “film fashion,” and this short highlights the classic cinematic look. Plus it’s NEIL LABUTE. Do you need us to repeat that NEIL LABUTE? Yes, the man has made some weird career choices when it comes to feature length films, but his plays are awesome. And here we have a short by him that feels more like a play than a film. Don’t care for LaBute? Then watch it for the succinct story. It really packs in the brevity and fluidity of the modern New York friendship and romance. Enjoy!

Title: The Giant Mechanical Man
Director: Lee Kirk
Length: 94 minutes
Synopsis: Jenna Fischer stars in this film about a 30-something who has lost her way in life. Unemployed and being pushed toward dating the archetypical “wrong guy,” she finds solace in a fellow lost soul, a street performer whose talent is being a living statue.
Why We’re Excited: The concept of The Giant Mechanical Man is a bit schmaltzy, but we just love Jenna Fischer and think this last year of indie performances are setting her up to be more than a TV star. Here she reminds us that she can be quirky adorable and have a movie career without being a typical Hollywood sex-starlet – a sex-let if you will. We’re excited to see more of Fischer’s work and we really just don’t want to miss a thing.

Title: Road Movie
Director: Dev Benegal
Length: 95 minutes
Synopsis: Vishnu is stuck in a family business that he wants no part of. Itching to break free, he jumps at the chance to drive the family truck across country and Vishnu’s trip becomes a journey full of wacky characters and amazing surprises.
Why We’re Excited: The plot may sound similar to oodles of road trip movies in the U.S., but this film comes complete with stunning scenery and a Hugo-esque discovery that takes audiences back in time through the history of Bollywood cinema. With our 2011 love of Hugo, it is no surprise that movie lovers will indulge themselves in a film with a history of cinema that doesn’t involve the Lumiere brothers. Something new, something fresh and something to keep us excited to learn more.

Title: On the Mat
Director: Fredric Golding
Length: 87 minutes
Synopsis:
On the Mat follows a high school wrestling team through an entire season. The film captures the emotion of the sport, both for the team and the individual wrestlers.
Why We’re Excited:
This documentary offers a fly-on-the-wall look into the world of high school wrestling, highlighting aspects of the sport most people never consider, like seemingly manorexic tendencies when trying to make a weight class and the intense off-season training. Wrestling is a sport that doesn’t have the same reputation as football and baseball, yet On the Mat shares the intense spirit of the sport and the intensity of competition that can only be displayed by teenage boys. Also, we’re loving that Chris Pratt narrated the doc. He’s having quite a year (Oscar nom movie, spot on the successful show Parks and Rec). We can’t wait to see what his future holds.

Title: NEDs (Non-Educated Delinquents)
Director: Peter Mullen
Length: 124 minutes
Synopsis: Set in Scotland, the film focuses on John McGill, an extremely intelligent young boy. However, with problems at home, the bad reputation given to his name by his older brother’s actions, and the constant bullying at school, John strays off of his very promising path.
Why We’re Excited: With the US’s growing spotlight on the harms of bullying, this film gives us a heartbreaking and realistic view on Scotland’s youth and how youth bullying is a worldwide epidemic. As we see John’s slow spiral down, we realize that even the smartest people can make the stupidest mistakes while growing up. This film asks, can we ever really have a true second chance after we’ve messed up majorly, or do our mistakes have to hang over our heads forever? You may be surprised by how you answer that question after watching this film.
How You Can Watch: Available today through the end of the Festival (April 29) on the Tribeca VOD portal. All you need is a Netflix account.
