As much as we love staying at home, watching movies all day in front of the TV and on our shiny computer screens, we do have to go outside (eventually)… at least for food. Did you know there’s a magical place where you can get food AND movies?!
This weekend is a battle of two literary giants when it comes to successful franchises. By which we mean the Boy Who Didn’t Die taking on a familiar Pooh bear, a Tigger and Eey-ore.
We know there are a bunch of you decent folks out there who want to just kick back and relax for a nice evening with the husband. Or maybe just by yourself and some chocolate covered eggs instead? Maybe with a parrot that you’ve trained to sound like your ex-girlfriend. We don’t ask what creepy things you do when you’re alone and we don’t judge. We just pick good movies for you to watch! Here are our favorites that are coming out for instant viewing for you:
Summer is nearing and blockbusters are going to be spawning like mad soon. Big budget movies with awesome CGI and huge box office draws are right around the corner…
Major cinematic moments are happening in May. And to kick off the month, some of us here at FilmBuff saw Thor at midnight. Good news FilmBuffs: we were blown away by it. It’s so kick ass that we can’t even find a simile or metaphor to describe it. It’s the perfect balance of comedy, drama, mythology and action. And you are never bored. You know sometimes you think back over a movie and say to yourself, “Well it was good but I could have done without the XYZ scene”? With Thor those thoughts don’t exist. If only all the summer comic movies could be this missing…
What part of “Living investigator. Undead clients. Zombie partner.” as a tagline doesn’t make you excited?? That’s right, NO PART! If you like comic book adaptations filled with perfect camp, you will be excited to see this–we are!…
As much as we love staying at home, watching movies all day in front of the TV and on our shiny computer screens, we do have to go outside (eventually)… at least for food. Did you know there’s a magical place where you can get food AND movies?! Sounds too good to be true? We know! Checkout our list of movies you can go out and see.
Conan The Barbarian
But wait! It’s in 3D! Now before think FilmBuff has lost all credibility, Arnold isn’t in this one. And you should only see this under most dire straits. Like your gal pal or g/f is thinking about talking you into One Day and you would rather choke on your own vomit. And perhaps this one has the potential to beat out its predecessor. We also love the under dog and good revenge stories so what beats your whole village getting wiped out?
One Day
So if this movie doesn’t make you want to choke on your own vomit (which it shouldn’t!), you should check it out. This couple keeps meeting with each other on the same day during the course of 20 years of friendship. After leading separate lives and chance encounters, they still end up finding their way back to one another. Romantic? Annoying? You tell us.
Mozart’s Sister
All anyone ever talks about is Mozart this and Wolfgang that. At least, that’s what we think his sister, Nannerl would have to say. Admittedly, the Mozart family seemed to have good genes, since they produced two prodigies. While the film was released in France last year, it’s making it’s way to US theaters for its premiere. Get cultured and check it out.
What are you seeing this weekend? Will you stay in with your VOD selections? We don’t blame you!
This weekend is a battle of two literary giants when it comes to successful franchises. By which we mean the Boy Who Didn’t Die taking on a familiar Pooh bear, a Tigger and Eey-ore. In fact, this is such a bare weekend that this match is the biggest bout we could hope to conjure. Puns and references aside, let’s check out our choices for this fine, fine weekend.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2is the first of the acclaimed book-to-screen-adaptions split to gain a better profit margin. And why not? For a franchise that’s spanned the last decade, turned Daniel Radcliffe into a marquee(s) name and made us forget the last time we saw Ralph Fiennes with a nose. Here, the titular boy wizard finally faces off against Lord Voldemort in the type of magic-centric battle that Potter fans have been waiting for since they were in middle school.
Winnie the Pooh
Of course, the other literary titan is Winnie The Pooh, which features a brand new cast of modern voice acting talent taking up the various roles in the Hundred Acre Woods. From Jim Gaffigan (as Pooh!) and Tom “Spongebob” Kenny (Rabbit!) and Craig Ferguson (who had been a better gator if you ask us), the gang has a case of mistaken notes and kidnapped plots that send our favorite honey-addict off on a “mission” to rescue his friend Christopher Robins. It’s also a battle of our childhood heroes!
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Wayne Wang is a fascinating director, if only for the scope of his work. Chan Is Missing is a slice-of-life look at Chinese immigrants working in San Francisco in the ’80s and later gaining mainstream acceptance with the adaptation of Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club. His latest, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which has limited release today, takes on Chinese cultural identity and progressing through the generations. Of course, that is the ultra-scaled down version to describe Wang’s adaptation, but we assume you’ll make the trek out to catch it if you can.
AND…that’s your Multiplex Roundup for July 15th! What are you thinking of seeing? Let us know in the comments.

Here are our favorites that are coming out for instant viewing for you:
If you are not a character in one of Tarantino's movies, you're really not that cool at all.
Two of Tarantino’s greatest classics, these crazy flicks are available to all Netflix subscribers. If violent crime is your deal and you don’t want to get arrested, might we suggest watching one of these instead of killing people or robbing them. And people say movies cause violence! How frightfully silly.
You look pretty shook up! You been goofin’ with the bees?
Well somebody has! Because they are vanishing. Seriously, kids. Bees are disappearing and no one seems to be doing much about it. Well the guys who made The Vanishing of the Bees want to get to the bottom of it. You can see this documentabee on Netflix right this second! If bees are not your cup of tea, Ellen Page narrates. Girl is cute. You may be saying “well, if she’s just narrating, how will I see her cuteness?” You’ll just know, man! Don’t even worry about it.
Amazon Instant Video Presents Florent: Queen of the Meat Market
For only three American dollars, you can be the proud renter of this delightful documentary! Amazon Instant Video welcomes you to experience this famous New York landmark without the hassle of air fare or other traveling unpleasantries. Julianne Moore, Isaac Mizrahi and Michael Musto all vouch for the authenticity and class of this diner. And in this day and age, if you can’t trust celebrities… then, what a sad world we live in.
Summer is nearing and blockbusters are going to be spawning like mad soon. Big budget movies with awesome CGI and huge box office draws are right around the corner. This seems like the perfect time to remind ourselves of some old favorites and upcoming sleeper hits. For starters, we’ve got a treat for you New Yorkers (sorry everyone else…keep reading, we’ve got some treats for you below). Starting today and sticking around until Wednesday, you can see 3:10 to Yuma, the classic western starring Glenn Ford, at the Film Forum. This is not the 2007 remake with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, but a true 35mm classic. Take a gander:
If you’re in LA instead, head over to The Cinefamily theatre and check out Love Exposure, starting today and staying till May 19th. The main character, Yu Honda, is an upstanding citizen, who has nothing to admit during Catholic confessional, so he sets out to commit some sins so his priest father believes he is repenting. From that intriguing premise, the plot takes some interesting turns that you may want to see for yourself:
And for everyone else, the best thing we could possibly recommend is Bridesmaids. Frankly, it’s about freaking time a recent wedding movie has been remotely good, and Bridesmaids is incredible. The cast is star-studded and the writing is brilliant. It has been a long time since a movie caused us to laughed like pscyh ward patients. Each actress really holds her own, but Melissa McCarthy especially shines. And all you guys out there who loathe their girlfriends for dragging you to this…get over it! Trust us when we tell you this isn’t a chick flick. Man up and check it out. You’ll love it.

Also, Koji Wakamatsu, the kick ass filmmaker we are pimping out this month (so stay tuned), is coming out with a brand new film called Caterpillar. It follows a war hero who returns home a quadriplegic and the shifting of his relationships with his wife and his town. Since Japan is more of a male-dominant society it is interesting to see how Wakamatsu handles the wife’s view of the marriage and the situation her husband finds himself in. Really compelling stuff here…you need to see it for yourself.
After being totally depressed with Caterpillar, why not shift to a comedy? Check out Scout’s Honor. Chris Kattan and Fred Willard star in a super campy…camp movie about thirty year-old men trying to earn their last badge at Camp Bear Claw. Yes, that name is real, and yes, they have extensive knowledge about plant life. You’re welcome.
What part of “Living investigator. Undead clients. Zombie partner.” as a tagline doesn’t make you excited?? That’s right, NO PART! If you like comic book adaptations filled with perfect camp, you will be excited to see this–we are! We also hope it doesn’t let us down terribly, we don’t want another Catwoman, we want another Scott Pilgrim.
If campy isn’t quite your style, check out The Wild Hunt. It’s epic and original on so many levels. Starting out as an “innocent” re-enactment and then epically turning into a Shakespearean tragedy of sorts is all sorts of awesome.
You should also check out Game of Thrones on HBO. It’s basically like watching a mini Lord of the Rings every week. It’s HBO though, so there is lots of sex, gore, violence, incest, sword-fighting, language, etc. But it’s totally worth it. It’s absolutely brilliant and it’s multi-million dollar budget is very apparent–in the best way possible.
We won’t judge you for getting those chills you have right now.
